I grew out of reading children’s books a long time ago, however, I received a request from my younger brother to read one of his favorite books. I was thrown off at first because my brother is not the book-loving type (never has been, probably never will be), and the title of the book was “Galactic Hot Dogs” which didn’t seem like the type of book I would read in the first place. When I asked my brother what he liked so much about the book he responded with “This book was very interesting and I loved it, it’s filled with suspense and it’s a funny book, it is genuinely a good book.” which set off another red flag because all of the books he reads, or we force him to read, he ends up hating. So, I took it upon myself to revert back to my inner child and see what made Galactic Hot Dogs 1: Cosmoe’s Wiener Getaway by Max Brallier and Rachel Maguire appear to be such a great book.
Against my greater wish to stand firm and tell my brother that his favorite book was horrible, I simply cannot because that would be a lie. Galactic Hot Dogs 1: Cosmoe’s Wiener Getaway is truly a great children’s book that leads the reader on a sarcastically funny adventure through space to defeat the Ultimate evil and make an unlikely friend. I definitely would recommend this book to a 6-12-year-old rambunctious child that is a bit hesitant to read or even as a funny bedtime story. As an adult, I found the plot changes to be a bit much but keep in mind that this book was meant to be read by children I think that the changes will work better to grab and keep the attention of the little ones so they don’t put it down. Overall, I think that the narration and story-line keep the reader guessing what comes next and the use of illustrations to keep the reader engaged in the story which comes together to make an excellent book.

Synopsis (From my understanding/opinion)

Cosmoe and his best friend Big Humphree are space travelers that own a hot dog selling food truck. They are about to participate in an intergalactic food truck cook-off when an intruder gets on their ship and steals the Mega-Dog that Cosmoe and Humphree planned on winning the contest with. They soon discover that the intruder is none other than Princess Dagger and she doesn’t plan on leaving their ship any time soon. When Queen Dagger, Princess Dagger’s mother and ruler of the Dark Kingdom, discovers that her daughter is missing she assumes that Cosmoe kidnapped Princess Dagger and sends out her royal navy out to terminate him. After evading Queen Dagger’s attempts to get her daughter back, Princess Dagger tells Cosmoe that she hates her life and only acted out because she wanted friends and to go on an adventure. Cosmoe decides that the evil Princess can stay and live on the ship with them and, while they are discussing their living arrangements, the ship gets a distress beacon from the Lost Triangle, a place of lost things and treasure. To complete the mission and get the treasure the crew must defeat zombie space pirates, come out on top in a wrestling contest against a legendary monster worm, and win the most complicated video game in all of the universe to complete the Map-O-Sphere puzzle pieces then destroy it so that no one unleashes the evil in the Lost Triangle.

When all of the pieces are connected Princess Dagger betrays Cosmoe and Humphree by stealing the pieces and taking them back to her evil mother. Upon gaining the power of the Map-O-Sphere, Queen Dagger unleashes it to create a monster that shakes the earth and puts the life of Cosmoe in danger. Princess Dagger has another change of heart and decides that she no longer wants to be evil and saves Cosmoe from certain death. To defeat the evil monster the reunited crew flies the ship into the belly of the beast and explodes it from the inside using a barrel of “Humphree’s hot hot sauce” and shooting it with a laser. After escaping the explosion and finally defeating the monster, the crew sets up their food truck on “The Tropical Moon of Mowee” where Princess and Queen Dagger make amends and the crew settles down to await their next adventure.
